The North Country Trail is the longest National Scenic Trail in the United States. It spans 4,600 miles from New York to North Dakota. The most popular section of the NCT in Michigan is within Manistee National Forest and I wanted to map this. I ended up with a 130 mile section of trail that includes only 7.5 miles of road walking. Is stretches from Croton Dam in the south to Hodenpyl Dam in the north.
Using data from the NCT website I was able to cut out the data from everywhere but inside MNF. Using a data sheet posted on Facebook as well as info from blogs I added known water sources, paid campsites, and established free campsites. The map is broken up into 10-12 mile sections for ease of planning, but feel free to export it and change it to suit your needs.
Since this is a National Forest camping is permitted just about anywhere as long as you follow a few rules: you must camp at least 200 feet from any body of water, away from any official camping grounds, and you must follow the Leave No Trace 7 Principals.
