Michigan's fall color doesn't arrive all at once. It starts in the Upper Peninsula in late September, rolls through northern Lower Michigan by mid-October, and finally reaches the southern part of the state in late October and even early November. That means you can chase peak color across the state for nearly six weeks — if you know where to point the truck each week.
How Fall Color Moves Across Michigan
Upper Peninsula: peaks around Oct 7, past peak by late October.
Northern Lower Peninsula: peaks around Oct 21.
Southern Lower Peninsula: peaks late October into early November.
Exact dates shift a week or two year to year depending on rainfall and temperature, so check a live foliage tracker the week before you go — but the north-to-south order is reliable every year.
Upper Peninsula — Peak Early October
The Lake of the Clouds overlook is one of the single best color views in the Midwest, and the campground empties out right when the hardwoods peak.
Maple ridges frame both falls, and the river takes on a tannin-gold color that plays well against turning leaves.
Northern Lower Peninsula — Peak Mid-to-Late October
Straits views plus 10,000+ acres of hardwood forest, with campsites that are wide open once the Mackinac Bridge crowds leave for the season.
Old-growth white pine mixed with sugar maple and beech makes for one of the more dramatic color contrasts in the state.
Southern Lower Peninsula — Peak Late October to Early November
Michigan's largest state park outside the Upper Peninsula, with rolling glacial terrain that holds color well into late October.
Oak and hickory dune forest above Lake Michigan, still holding color after most of the state has gone bare.
Planning Your Trip
Fall color weekends are the one exception to fall's quiet-campground rule — the two or three weekends around peak color at a well-known park can book up almost as fast as a summer holiday. A few ways around that:
Go midweek if you can. Monday through Thursday sites at even the most popular fall-color parks routinely have same-week availability, even during peak color. If you're locked into a weekend, book as early as possible or set an alert and let us watch for a cancellation.
