Beechwood loop sites 170-185 are the most requested — large, electric, close to the bathhouse. Lighthouse loop sites 320-330 are closest to the Lake Michigan beach. If you have flexibility on loop, filter by electric and search across all loops for the best opening.
The Big Sable Point Lighthouse Hike
The Big Sable Point Lighthouse hike is the signature experience at Ludington State Park and the reason many campers specifically choose this park. The round trip is approximately 8.5 miles along the Lake Michigan shoreline and through a sand dune ecosystem. The lighthouse itself dates to 1867 and is one of the most photographed in Michigan.
The trail is accessible from multiple trailheads within the park. Start early — the lighthouse beach fills with day visitors by mid-morning on summer weekends. Campers have the advantage of starting at sunrise before the crowds arrive.

What to Know Before You Camp
Hookups and Amenities
Most loops have electric hookups at 20 or 30 amp. There are no water or sewer hookups — this is not a full hookup park. Modern bathhouses with flush toilets and showers are available in Beechwood and Pines loops. Skyline loop uses vault toilets.
Beach Access
The park has both a Lake Michigan beach and a Hamlin Lake swimming beach. The Lake Michigan beach is the main draw — wide, sandy, and stunning on clear days. The Hamlin Lake beach is calmer and better for young children. Both are within reasonable walking distance from all loops though Lighthouse loop campers have the shortest walk to Lake Michigan.
Pets
Pets are allowed in the campground on a 6-foot leash. Pets are not permitted on the swimming beaches. The park has designated pet exercise areas.
Season Dates
The campground typically opens in late April and closes in late October. Exact dates vary by year — check michigan.gov/dnr for current season dates. The park grounds and day use areas remain open year-round.
