About Negwegon State Park
Negwegon State Park protects 4,000 acres and 8 miles of undeveloped Lake Huron shoreline south of Alpena, including a full mile of sandy beach — a rarity for a state park with no development along its coast. There's no drive-in campground; instead, the Negwegon Rustic Hike-in/Paddle-in Campground offers four backcountry sites located 1.1 to 2.2 miles from the main parking lot, open April through November.
The park is also a designated dark sky preserve, making it one of the better stargazing spots on the Lake Huron coastline, and its mix of pine, hardwood, and aspen forest supports wildlife including bald eagles, Blanding's turtles, and the rare Pitcher's thistle. A Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.
Things to Do
Hiking to the backcountry sites along the shoreline is the park's main activity, with trails also suited to cross-country skiing in winter. The undeveloped beach is a draw for anyone wanting Lake Huron shoreline without crowds or facilities, and the park sees regular use for hunting and paddling as well as backcountry camping.
Best Time to Visit
Spring through fall covers the camping season, with the dark sky preserve making any clear night worth a visit. Fall brings hunting season and quieter trails for hikers who prefer solitude.
